I owe an apology to all my friends, whom I promised a walk together or just a brief visit. I didn't manage to keep this promise. It's the pandemic fault. Two years of "new" life.

Friendship in the pandemic

Quando l'Italia viene citata come esempio dall'Austria
Solitamente alterno i post in italiano a quelli in inglese.

What is freedom in a pandemic?
Since Monday, we are again on lockdown. This time, the whole Austria is furious. Vaccinated people are angry with the unvaccinated ones, who let the virus circulate, and with the government, which had promised "freedom and normality" for the vaccinated. Unvaccinated people are angry with the government, which has discriminated and segregated them, even if healthy (and tested). People working in hospitals, especially in the ICUs, are angry with the government, which has not improved their working conditions and has failed to contain the pandemic. Scientists are furious because their call has not been timely heard and it might be already too late.
Honestly, I'm not angry. However, I'm having some hard time trying to understand those, who are demonstrating for their "lost" freedom. Those claiming that the vaccination is a free choice (only if you decide not to get it), who don't realise that their choice can endanger the freedom (and the health) of others. Those, who have no idea what jail is, what does it mean not having the possibility to write and march for an ideal, what confinement is, etc. Basically, people who say "freedom" without knowing the meaning of the word. As scientist, I don't understand people believing in terrorizing news published on secretive website, with no control of the sources, but mistrusting scientific evidence, published on peer-reviewed journals, from independent labs and research centers. Being skeptical and critical is fine, as well as being open to alternative points of view, but why is such a skepticism applied only to science? No surprise, we are in a place full of "Heilpraktikern" (non traditional practitioners). We scientists (also those like me, not working in medicine) are partly guilty, we didn't learn to communicate science in an efficient way. Our language is not understood and, when we try to explain, we are accused of secrecy.
I feel disappointed and frustrated by the situation. Two years of "half-life" lost and no hopes of a full recovery. We look the others with suspect. We trust none. We underrate our actual freedom, but can we call this "life"? What kind of human being will come out from this experience? Are we going back to the "homo homini lupus" mentality? Oh well, now I'm seriously worried.

What would you do for friendship?
Some days ago, I witnessed an unexpected sign of friendship among colleagues. A colleague of us told in the evening that she was sick, she had back pains and couldn't come to work the day after, nor working from home, because she couldn't even sit. It came out that she didn't have any medicament, painkiller or similar at home. A German colleague of us offered to bring her a good (and common) painkiller, as she just had the same problem a few days before. Even though it was late (9 pm), dark, and not quite warm, she jumped on her bike to bring some relief to a colleague, who a German would classify as "Bekannte" (acquaintance), not as "Freundin" (friend).

That's another point. If I was sick, would have I asked for help? I'm so proud that I tend not to ask. And not to accept the offered help. She had no problems accepting and I'm pretty sure that she'll find the way to return the favor, without urge, without feeling that she has debit. Last but not least, the noble colleague, the angel on bike, is lutheran, but not much active in the church. How many active catholics would have done the same? Religion as nothing to do in this case, it is a matter of "Erziehung", education, and humanity. A good lesson for all of us.

(Sotto in italiano)
If there was no pandemic, I would have flown to Chicago to attend in person the 84th Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, as in the tradition. Well, perhaps not, because this year, we got a very reduced amount of travel funding. The last year, the annual meeting had been cancelled/postponed. This year, the organizers created something unique: a hybrid conference, giving the opportunity to attend it in person and remotely. Months ago, I didn’t think to register, even virtually, because I had nothing to present (after one year pandemic), but then something came out and I decided to register for the virtual attendance, also to support the great work of the organizers.
The pre-conference poster presentation went just fine. We had the great opportunity to increase the visibility of our posters with a 3 minutes live talk and 2 minutes live questions, but unfortunately only a few people attended the two sessions planned. The actual conference was hold according to the time zone of Chicago, which means between 3:30 pm and 11:30 pm in Europe. All the evening events were too late for the European time, but it will be possible to check them later during the year. Changing session, instead of physically changing room, required loading another webpage. The first part of talks were given live by speakers in the audience and the second part consisted of pre-recorded talks, whose speakers were connected live for the questions, which were asked both by people in the room, as usual, and by the remote audience, but by e-mail. These latter questions were read live by the chairmen. It sounds complicated, but after the initial skepticism it worked pretty well.
Honestly, we are all tired of online conferences! However, seeing real people in a room (wearing a mask and dealing with the restrictions dictated by the pandemic) contributes to increase our resilience and patience. The broadcasting was professionally done and for sure was not cheap. As remarked in the society meeting, the registration fees won’t cover all the costs for such a hybrid conference. However, I hope that this hybrid mode will survive the pandemic, to give the opportunity to attend overseas conference to scientists (not only students) with limited funding. I missed indeed the social events and the interactions in front of the posters, but better this way than no conference at all!
_._._._._._
